Introducing Codeverse: Explorer

8 min read

Big, biiiiiig news this week. We're excited to announce the launch of Codeverse: Explorer to our Codeverse Crew Members. Members can now experience Codeverse beyond the studio! I sat down with Priya Mathew, our SVP Product, and Kyle Foundry, our Creative Director, to discuss this new offering and how it supplements what kids are learning at the studio.

What is Codeverse: Explorer?

Priya: Codeverse: Explorer is our way of extending the studio experience for our Codeverse Crew members so that they can code from anywhere. Our members love building apps and games at the studios, and they were begging us to be able to work on their projects at home or on vacation. So, Codeverse: Explorer allows them to do exactly that!

Starting today, all members can pick up a Codeverse: Explorer Launch Kit at any of our studios. There is no additional charge as Codeverse: Explorer is one of the many perks of being a member.

What's included in the Codeverse: Explorer Launch Kit?

Kyle: The Launch Kit is awesome! It contains guided coding activities (aka "Missions") that make it easy for 6-13 year olds to build apps and games remotely. Inside the kit, kids will find:

  • Missions: Fun coding projects, with step-by-step instructions, that teaches kids how to create a game or app.
  • Trading Cards: Collectible cards featuring objects that they can use in their games and apps.
  • Trading Card case: A clear case to store Trading Cards.
  • Space Case: A colorful container to organize top secret Missions and Trading Cards in one place.

After receiving the Launch Kit, Crew Members will get printed Missions as well as collectible Trading Cards each week at the studio to take home.

What do Codeverse Crew Members need to get started with Codeverse: Explorer?

Priya: Crew Members just need access to a desktop or tablet device with internet access. We support the latest two versions of operating systems and browsers. See more details here.

To get started, a parent or guardian will log into the Codeverse Account Portal on their laptop or iPad at home. From there, they will see a colorful card with their child's name on it that they click on to login. Then, their child will be able to work on existing projects they have created at our studio, or create a brand new project!

Once a Crew Member receives a Codeverse: Explorer Launch Kit, how often do they receive additional Missions?

Priya: Each week at the studio, Crew members will get to pick a Mission card and collectible Codeverse Trading cards to take home. If a Crew member is going on vacation, families can pick up Trading Cards and Missions in advance at any one of our studios.

Every Codeverse Mission includes:
1. A Mission Brief that explains what they will build and what coding concepts the Mission covers. (Every Mission covers multiple universal coding concepts, such as objects, variables, loops, and methods!)
2. Step-by-step instructions for how to build an app or game.
3. Customization ideas for how kids can add more objects to their app or game to make it their own.

Kyle: With each Mission, Crew members will also get collectible Trading Cards. Every Trading Card contains an object which can be easily customized, using code, by the kids! For example, for our SpaceDog Trading Card, kids can use code to update the object attributes to customize the dog's eyes and mouth to be different emotions like happy or sad. Kids can also change the color of the dog's body, chest, and collar.

How does Codeverse: Explorer complement what Crew Members are learning at the studio?

Priya: Kids are naturally curious and love to build. Whether a child is developing a multiplayer video game, programming the concert-lights or TVs, or utilizing our 3D printers, our studios encourage kids to express themselves creatively, and help bring their ideas to life! This approach is extremely motivating for the kids. We wanted Codeverse: Explorer to extend that experience at home and on the go. So, the Codeverse: Explorer Missions are an additional option for kids to build guided games and apps in the studio or at home. The Codeverse Trading Cards help spark kids' imaginations about what games they can build and how they can customize them to make them their own.

Is Codeverse: Explorer available to non-members?

Priya: Right now, Codeverse: Explorer is only available to Codeverse Crew Members. (If you're interested in learning more about our membership, go here!)

You have worked on Codeverse: Explorer since day one! What excites you the most about it?

Priya: I love how it inspires kids to see coding as a creative activity. I learned how to code as an adult, and I was shocked when I realized it was felt more like writing or making art than doing math and science.

With Codeverse: Explorer, we intentionally focused on how to make the product kid-first. For example, we made sure the learning content blended with things that we know kids love doing, like building video games, completing puzzles, and collecting trading cards. Too often, learning content for kids just feels like a textbook and it goes in one ear and out the other.

Recently, we had a Codeverse Crew member whose Hamburger Trading Card flew out of the car window! He begged his mom to get out, on a busy intersection, to retrieve it. Luckily, we were able to give him a new replacement Trading Card. That kind of emotion and excitement is what gets kids hooked on coding. When I'm at the studio, I daydream about what these kids will grow up to invent. It’s inspiring to be a part of that!

Kyle: Bringing Codeverse: Explorer to life has been one of the most rewarding projects of my career. Crafting a joyful and seamless experience between our existing studios, new physical materials, and expanding the Codeverse app was a challenge, and took major contributions from the whole Codeverse team. The way the entire company rallied around this project and brought it to life at such a high level of execution is truly remarkable.

What excites me the most about Codeverse: Explorer is now our Crew Members don’t have to wait a whole week between their coding missions. Kids can now explore and create with Kidscript as often as they want, from the comfort of their home. I can’t wait to see all of the amazing projects kids bring back into the studio each week. They are going to learn to code at an accelerated rate, and hopefully get their parents involved, too!
