4 Ways Learning to Code Will Improve Your Child's Math Skills

In fact, learning how to code can improve your child's math skills (and their confidence!) in a fun and enjoyable way. Here's how.

When I was a kid, I used to have re-occurring nightmares about my math classes. Math can be difficult and scary when you're a young student-but it doesn't have to be! In fact, learning how to code can improve your child's math skills (and their confidence!) in a fun and enjoyable way.

Here's how:

1. Coding Improves Logic and Reasoning

Learning to code is all about recognizing patterns and creating and following sequences. When children learn to code, they learn to follow a series of steps to achieve their desired result- just like they do when solving mathematical equations! Coding strengthens the mindset necessary to excel at math- by thinking like a coder, students inherently think logically and sequentially.

2. Coding Brings Math and Creativity Together

Children who thrive creatively may feel confined, challenged, or even bored by the strict formulaic nature of mathematics. When it comes to coding, math is a means to an end- students use math to make their creations come to life. Once they start to see the effects of their code on the game or app they are building, children are excited to use math to expand upon their creation. When math becomes a tool for creativity, even the most math-resistant children become excited to use and expand upon their math skills!

3. Coding Encourages Academic Resilience and Problem Solving

We've touched on this before, but it bears repeating.

Of all the subjects taught in elementary and middle school, math can be the most frustrating for young students. There is little room for error when dealing with numbers and formulas. Students who don't immediately "get" the way math is taught in class can be tempted to give up, or decide they simply aren't smart enough to succeed in mathematics. This is why it is vitally important that children understand that failure is just a part of the learning process.

"Debugging" is a core concept in the Codeverse curriculum. Debugging is the skill of recognizing and solving errors in one's code, and it's a common part of the process of all coders- from beginners to the ultra-experienced. By learning to code, children begin to understand that mistakes are common and okay. Young coders recognize that there is just as much value in their ability to solve a problem than there is in getting something right on the very first try.

4. Game-Building Introduces Advanced Mathematical Concepts in a Way that is Non-Intimidating

Most parents would be quite surprised if their first grader came home after school and said they learned about physics or geometry that day. However, this happens all of the time at Codeverse! Even our youngest students often utilize advanced mathematical concepts to create their digital games- sometimes without even realizing it!

It's easy for students who don't quickly get the hang of math to be intimidated by new and advanced concepts. That's why coding is so great- it introduces children to never-before-seen math concepts in a way that is easily digestible. As the kids develop their coding skills, they also develop their confidence in tackling increasingly challenging mathematical principles.

Math is made easier and more fun when students use it in their coding! Learning to code boosts children's confidence in their abilities to identify and follow sequences, problem solve, and think critically. Try out a coding class for your child and see for yourself how coding can revolutionize their academic attitude and performance!
