All Your FAQs about Minecraft Coding for Kids, Answered

For starters, what is it? We answer this and more as we break down Minecraft coding for kids.

Even though it’s been around since 2009, you may still find yourself asking, ‘What exactly is Minecraft?’ The better question is, what isn’t Minecraft?

If you landed on this article, then you probably know that it might have something to do with coding (maybe) and that your kid can’t stop talking about it (definitely). Don’t fret—we’ll answer all your FAQs so you, too, can become an expert on Minecraft coding for kids.

OK, so back to the original question: What is Minecraft?

Minecraft started out as a simple computer game that became so popular, Microsoft bought it in 2014. Since then, it’s won tons of awards and has become the best-selling game of all time.

Why do kids like it so much?

Simply put, because you can do just about anything in Minecraft. It’s what they call a sandbox game—you start out in open land with no specific goals to accomplish. Then, by “mining” blocks of elements such as wood, metal, and soil, you build your own world and wander freely within it.

What does this have to do with coding?

Both coding and Minecraft use blocks to build things, so combining the two was a no-brainer. Microsoft has worked with Code.org to develop educational versions of Minecraft for K–12 students. Schools in more than 115 countries have adopted this program as part of their STEM curriculum.

The educational version incorporates elements of Scratch, Tynker, JavaScript, and Microsoft’s MakeCode. And thanks to the open-world format of Minecraft, the lessons encourage creative thinking and collaboration.

How is the educational version different?

The entire class plays together under the guidance of their teacher. The teacher controls the flow of the game, giving students problems to solve with help from their classmates. The area of exploration is limited so that the group is working together.

What’s this I keep hearing about “mods”?

Mods, which is short for “modifications”, are sort of like expansion packs for the original Minecraft game (not the educational version). While the standard game is nearly endless, mods add even more opportunity for gameplay and exploration. They can update your game with anything from new animals and structures to rockets that allow you to fly through outer space.

How are Minecraft mods for kids made?

They are made by accessing Minecraft’s source code and changing it. That may sound complicated, but programmers of all ages are able to make mods and share them online. In fact, the simplistic nature of Minecraft makes it great practice material for younger coders looking to level up their skillset.

Why is my kid watching other kids play Minecraft on YouTube?

Seems counterintuitive, right? But kids can learn a lot of tips and tricks from watching their peers play. (Check out some of our favorite Minecraft YouTube channels.)

I still have questions.

Did we mention that Minecraft is multiplayer? Try playing with your kids next time they fire it up.

Many of our students tell us that their Codeverse lessons help them better understand Minecraft and level up their skills. If your kid is interested in Minecraft or coding in general, try a free 1-on-1 class.
